The Truth About our Educational System

Like most Nigerians, I didn't go to any Nigeria-based foreign school. Schools that advertise in newspapers.

I have read a lot of economic papers/statements on Nigeria. At first, I took them very personal and found faults in every negative thing said about Nigeria. That a graduate in Nigeria is much less productive than a graduate in US. That our primary schools are filled with unmotivated and poor quality teachers, such that it's not uncommon to find students with Primary School Leaving Certificates who can't read and write well. And the secondary schools are just slightly better. I still find faults in these statements but it's because I know of exceptions. Unfortunately, the exceptions are very few. In fact, I used to think I'm an exception, until I met reality. It's almost like starting my education all over after University. I even bought English grammar books. I had to teach myself almost everything from scratch. And to keep in touch with reality, and not the delusion I see around, I joined several global job boards and forums. I'm constantly assessing myself from a global standpoint. How do I stand in the international labour market?

Every major industry in the world started from the Schools. The internet we are crazy about now has being in existence since the 1960s, used by students in Universities. The entire personal computing industry started in the universities. Most of the big companies started as a student's research project. The multi-billion dollar oil refining industry began as an interest of a University student in finding an alternative to whale oil. The entire aviation industry is the result of over a 1000 years of research publications. If a tree is judged by its fruits, then the universities in Nigeria are not good. There are Nigerians who have written world changing research papers, all while in a foreign university.

While in my final year, some of us tried to do a real project. Something unique, not done before. Most of us gave up when we saw the task involved. A friend got stuck for months at getting components; the foreign company that sells the components only sell in bulk. Some mechanical students couldn't get the special type of metal/alloy needed for their projects; the only metals in Nigeria are Steel, Aluminium and Iron. A set before us that tried building a car ended up using heavy metals for the car body. Students in Sciences limited themselves to the test equipment they have, mostly old equipment.

And as for the reason for this. Fingers are pointing everywhere -- the government, the lecturers, the university boards, the students, the parents, no funding, e.t.c. But there's one thing you and I can do. We can let this educational decay die with us. We shouldn't pass it on to the next generation. Ensure your (future) child gets a proper education. Education is only as expensive as books and a teacher. Make sure your child meets the learning targets of every stage of his education. Some of the people we study their works in school were self educated and learned everything they knew from reading. No matter how not-so-rich you are, buy and make your child read quality books. Let him enjoy reading. Be his part-time teacher, if you can't afford one. Don't let us pass on this decay. Learning is not exclusive to the inner walls of an educational institution. By making sure that your child meets the learning objectives of having a primary school education, a secondary school education, and a university education, you're building a new and better educational system for us. Whether you did this by schooling them in the best school on earth, or the almost free one you could afford and supplementing with lots of books and your time. It's a worthy sacrifice. They will replace the current politicians, current lecturers, current labour pool, and current parents. And soon, the exceptional brilliance we see in a few of our contemporaries will become a national norm. And Canadians will come here for their study abroad programs.

Redeemer University Student To Spend Extra Year For Missing Church Service

Redeemers University of Nigeria. At RUN,they pay half a million every year for school fees.... a fee that most church members cannot even afford and some of the students who are there,their parents struggle to make sure their kids get the best of the four years they spend their,students in other Universities are rendered redundant because of the ASUU issue blah blah... ..so RUN it is for the majority.

Info reaching me indicates that a female student amongst others is/are to be punished by being sent to rehab because she/they missed going to church on Sunday!

Kwankwaso Declares Free Education In Kano

In a bid to address educational backwardness of the state, Kano state Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has declared free and compulsory education at level in the state.

Kwankwaso who made the declaration during the presentation of 2014 appropriation bill to the House of Assembly revealed that the gesture would commenced from 2014 academic year.

Kwankwaso stated that “in our collective resolve to drive a knowledge base economy, government has already concluded arrangement to adopt a free education for all indigene at all levels: primary, secondary and tertiary institutions in the state.”

The Governor added that “this is in addition to sponsoring of Kano indigenes to pursue their various degree programmes locally and internationally”, pointing out that the commencement of the free education for all Kano state indigenes from primary, secondary and tertiary institutions starting from the new academic session in 2014.”

ASUU Leaders Assault Journalists In Minna Over Strike Report

Contrary to the earliar report that the strike has been called off! ASUU will but Check this out! After hours of endless waiting by journalists, leaders of the Academic Staff Union of University, emerged from the Senate Building of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, venue of the National Executive Committee meeting of the union, to harass the anxious newsmen. They shouted repeatedly, “who invited these silly people.” One of the notable members of the Union that instructed security men to order the journalists to leave the building is the Chairman of ASUU in FUT, Minna, Dr. Abdulfatai Jimoh, who went ahead to assault the Daily Trust correspondent, Aliyu Hamagan. Jimoh had earlier thought Hamagan was a member of the Union and invited him to come closer. He then asked, “Who brought this silly people inside? What are they doing here?” Hamagan, however, responded, “I am one of the people you are calling silly. I will not have you insult us like that.” Jimoh, on finding out that he was speaking with a journalist, pushed Hamagan and asked him to leave the premises, saying, “You people are intruding, we did not invite you. Get out of this place now.”

VC calls for water resources management

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Prof. Olusola Oyewole, has challenged researchers to seek ways of mitigating the effects of climate change in the country.

He also urged them to develop the nation’s water resource capabilities.

The vice-chancellor spoke at a workshop on Climate Change and Integrated Water Resources Management in South-West Nigeria.

The workshop was organised by the National Water Resources Capacity Building Network in partnership with the National Water Resources Institute, Kaduna and the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.

ASUU Declares 3-day Fasting And Prayer

Following several failed attempt at resolving the on-going strike, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) decided to go spiritual on Tuesday by declaring a three day fasting and prayer as they seek divine intervention to resolve the dispute between the union and the Nigerian government.

The decision to embark on spiritual intervention came during the union congress held at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan.

The congress which was presided over by the Chairman of University of Ibadan (UI) chapter of ASUU, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, stressed the need for God to help Nigerian leaders to do the needful and document the resolutions of their meeting with the President.

The congress which expressed optimism that the strike will end soon listed three prayer points to include: “the need for God to touch the heart of the Federal government to be committed towards funding public education and develop the nation.

They also asked God to protect the leadership of ASUU as they travel and that the purpose of the strike is actualized by placing universities in the league of world class institutions.”

ASUU Strike: FG Summons Vice-Chancellors To Abuja For Crucial Meeting

The Federal government had given university lecturers an ultimatum to resume classes today, Monday 9 December but the lecturers refused to obey this directive.

Following the university lecturers refusal to call off the lingering strike and resume classes, the Federal Government has summoned all Vice Chancellors of federal and state universities to a crucial meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

Also invited to the meeting were members of the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) On Needs Assessment Report for inauguration.

FG Pays N200b To CBN For ASUU

Barely twenty four hours to the expiration of the 4 December ultimatum Federal Government gave members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resume classes or be sacked, the federal government this morning bowed to one of the demands of the lecturers by paying N200 billion into an account opened with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

Disclosing this on Channels Television programme ‘Sunrise Daily’ this morning, Dr. Doyin Okupe, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs confirmed that the N200b demanded by ASUU to be paid into an account with the CBN has been done. The amount is meant for renewal of infrastructure facilities in public universities in the country.

But ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Fage Isa, accused the government of being insincere in its dealing with the striking lecturers. He urged the government to respond to its letter demanding the fulfillment of some conditions for it to call off the strike.

FUTO Sacks All Academic Staff

Following the orders by the Federal Government, urging all universities to re-open, the Senate of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) Tuesday sacked all academic staff with immediate effect.

FG Didnt Give ASUU Ultimatum – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has weekend, said his government did not give the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, an ultimatum to resume work or be sacked.

Fielding questions from newsmen at the expanded caucus meeting of the Bayelsa State Peoples Democratic Party held at Government House, Yenagoa, the President said, the Supervising Minister of Education only passed on the decision of the Committee of Vice Chancellors.

“We didn’t give them ultimatum; it was the Committee of Vice Chancellors that took that decision. The Supervising Minister of Education only passed on the decision.”
