“We didn’t give them ultimatum; it was the Committee of Vice Chancellors that took that decision. The Supervising Minister of Education only passed on the decision.”

Italian Woman Leaves $13Million To Her Cat

Maria Assunta was the wealthy widow of an Italian property tycoon. She passed away two weeks ago at age 94. What makes Assunta's passing so unique is all of her fortune was left to her 4-year-old cat , Tommaso, according to ABC News. The cat inherited $13 million in real estate and cash. Assunta had no children. When her health started to fail in 2009 she bequeathed her estate to Tommaso. Italian law prohibits animals, such as pets, from a direct inheritance , states the New York Daily News. Assunta could not find a satisfactory animal shelter to care for her cat when she passed away. Instead, her nurse Stefania took care of them until her passing. Stefania and Tommaso are living in an undisclosed location away from potential kidnappers and avoiding con artists. The cat is not the first to inherit a huge fortune.

Saheed drags Fathia to court over name

Few years ago, Saheed Balogun reportedly said he would soon stop his ex wife, Fathia Balogun, from using his name. Saheed was quoted to have said “She is my ex. As for my name that she is still answering, the deed will be done soon. The Nigerian law says that after three or four years, you can do something about it. If somebody wants to keep my name, what of the new person coming in? This has nothing to do with grudges.”

And now, it looks as if Saheed is set to do something about his threat.

A reliable source informed Saturday Beats that the actor had taken his ex to court insisting that she drop his name.

Keshi hails talented Mikel, Moses

Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi says Mikel Obi and Victor Moses have not only showed talent but commitment to the national team.

After helping Nigeria win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa in February, the duo played prominent roles in the country’s World Cup qualification this month.

And Keshi has declared that Chelsea midfielder Mikel and Liverpool forward Moses deserve credit for their efforts.

The former Eagles captain believes the players will emerge as some of the stars of Brazil 2014 World Cup finals.

“Moses is a talented youngster and has been giving his total commitment when he comes to play for Nigeria, but I believe that he has only given us 80 per cent. We hope he will give 100 per cent at the World Cup,” Keshi was quoted by MTNFootball.com as saying during the week.

“He is still young, but he can do better for the Super Eagles.

“For Mikel, I am happy that gradually the world is recognising his talents which he has been showing any time he plays in the national team.

Lagos Suspends Principal Of School Where Pupils Sit On Windows

A story on the dearth of good furniture in Ikeja Grammar School, Lagos, published by Saturday PUNCH last Saturday drew a wrong chord with the Lagos State Government.

Last Monday, it suspended the school principal for allowing this writer to gain access to the school premises and take photographs of classes where pupils sat on windows and concrete blocks while learning.

Even though it was reported in the story titled, “Lagos school where pupils learn sitting on windows, concrete blocks” that the principal was not around when this journalist visited the school, Saturday PUNCH learnt that her superiors have decided to hang the blame of the scandal on her.

Efforts to speak to the principal as the news of her suspension broke on Monday, were unsuccessful as she was nowhere to be found in the school. Teachers are not allowed to speak with the press in the state.

How to Stop Making Excuses

“I don’t know how.”

“It probably wouldn’t have worked anyways.”

“I’m too busy.”

How often do you catch yourself making excuses. Instead of doing something, you come up with ways to explain your inaction. Excuse-makers are usually seen as weak, lazy or cowardly.

I believe this is an unfair generalization.

We all make excuses once in a while. Sometimes we make excuses and other times we stop rationalizing and take action. I’m sure most of us can remember times when we procrastinated and wasted days before starting a project. I’m also sure most of us can remember times we started immediately, and finished ahead of schedule.

ASUU Dismisses FG’s Threat To Sack Lecturers

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said the Federal Government’s December 4 ultimatum issued to universities teachers to return to the classrooms is a clear indication that the government is not committed to implementing any of the resolutions it reached with the union. While reacting to the threat of the Federal Government to sack the lecturers if they fail to call off their five-month strike by Wednesday nest week, ASUU National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola Aremu, said the union was shocked that the government could have such plan when there was a shortfall of 60,000 lecturers in Nigerian universities, owing to the government’s failure to employ enough teachers.

Oshiomhole Apologises For His Heartless Comments To A Widow

Benin – Gov. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo on Friday apologised for the comments he made to a widow in Benin during an inspection tour on Mission Road, in the state capital, a fortnight ago.

Oshiomhole said that he now regretted the comments which had become the subject of discourse in the social media.

The Governor, however, noted that he made the comments in anger.

Oshiomhole’s apology was made when the leadership of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), paid him a courtesy visit in Benin.

He noted that though the challenge of modern times had bestowed on the shoulders of some women and single mothers the status of bread winners of their homes, such should not be used as an accuse to flout the laws.

The Governor urged the Muslim women leaders to use their offices to propagate the essence of healthy living among children and women in the nation and the need to maintain proper sanitary conditions in their neighbourhoods.

Oshiomhole lamented that the challenge of widowhood had also exposed children to different temptations, adding that there was the need for society to be careful, to avoid unwittingly creating more problems for the nation.

He noted that money was not the best thing that guaranteed ones happiness, “but honesty and selfless service.

The Governor added that if Muslims and Christians were adequately committed to their religious doctrines, the world would be a better place.

He urged the women to propagate the message of Islam through the nooks and crannies of the nation, and to also inculcate the values of honesty in their followers.

Oshiomhole, however, assured the association of government’s support in ensuring that its present leadership made remarkable progress and also consolidated on the successes of their predecessors.

Earlier, the FOMWAN National President, Hajia Amina Omoti, urged the state government to look into the issue of the teaching of Islamic Religious Studies in public schools in the state.

Omoti also solicited for government’s moral and financial support for the effective running of the association.

Ibrahimovic downplays UEFA record

Zlatan Ibrahimovic equalled the record for goals scored in the UEFA Champions League group stage, but says individual accolades mean nothing to him.

The Swede scored his eighth goal in Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-1 victory over Olympiakos at Parc des Princes on Tuesday night.

In doing so he equalled the tournament record, held by Cristiano Ronaldo, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Hernan Crespo and Filippo Inzaghi.

Ibrahimovic has a good chance of overtaking the record, if he scored in PSG’s final group game against Benfica, but after last night’s match he insisted he cares little for individual awards.

Julius Agwu Sues Etisalat For N100m For Blocking His Sim Card

Comedian Julius Agwu took Etisalat to court for blocking his business line. He is demanding for the whopping sum of N100million as compensation for jobs lost, contact lost and all the inconveniences he went through .

Below is a statement from his lawyer, Festus Keyamo…

“We are solicitors to Mr. Julius Agwu, one of Nigeria’s most sought after entertainers (hereinafter referred to as “our client”) and on whose behalf we write.

Our client is the owner of the Etisalat GSM phone number 08189555555, which he uses as his business line. On the 8th of October, 2013, our client travelled out of the country and returned on the 17th of the same month. Upon his return, he tried severally to make calls from the aforestated GSM line but same could not connect. Not only could he not make calls, he also could not receive calls on the said GSM line. This continued for some days until he got a message that his line had been blocked by the network provider.

Sequel to the above message, our client promptly visited your Abuja office at Hilton to report the matter. He was attended to by one Miss Joan, who informed him that somebody swapped his line. After our client successfully answered the security questions put to him, he was informed that his line had been restored, but the credit balance on the line was not returned.

Surprisingly, our client’s aforestated line was blocked again after he left your said Abuja office. Once again our client visited your office at the local wing of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Ikeja, Lagos to lodge a complaint, but painfully, nothing was done about it.

However, after sometime, our client was invited for a meeting at your head office in Lagos on the 14th of November, 2013 which he duly honoured.

Present at the meeting (in addition to the officials of your organization) was Mr. Mobolaji Okusaga, the Managing Director of The Quadrant Company, in his capacity as media agents/managers for Etisalat Nigeria.

At the end of the meeting, our client was told for the umpteenth time that they would get back to him, which they again failed to do.

LOSS OF BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES It cannot be over emphasized that your actions of unlawfully blocking and/or swapping our client’s line occasioned loss of business opportunities to him. As you are aware, our client as one of the most sought after Nigerian entertainers needs his phone line to be easily accessible to keep his business going. It therefore goes without saying that our client has lost some business opportunities as a result of your actions.

TAKE NOTICE that we have our client’s firm instruction to demand and hereby demand the sum of N100,000,000.00 (One Hundred Million Naira) as compensation for the loss of business opportunities and the inconvenience caused our client by reason of your unlawful and unjustified blocking and/or swapping of our client’s Etisalat GSM phone line.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that in the event that you fail, refuse or neglect to accede to our above stated demand within seven (7) days from the receipt of this letter, we shall be compelled to set in motion against you, all legal machineries necessary to obtain legal remedy for our client.”

Thank you. Yours sincerely.

IGP Orders Adequate Security In Varsity Campuses Nationwide

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, has ordered immediate provision of adequate security in and around university campuses nationwide.

This is contained in a statement issued by CSP Frank Mba, the Force Public Relations Officer, on Thursday in Abuja.

The statement said the measure was designed to secure life and property in the institutions and provide enabling environment for lecturers, students and other members of staff to go about their lawful businesses without hindrance.

“The directive is a proactive and confidence-boosting measure designed to ensure that nothing untoward happens in our academic communities,” it said.

National Identity Card To Become ATM, Travel Card

Abuja - The new national identity card can be used as Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card anywhere there is MasterCard logo in the world, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has said.

NIMC’s Director of Technical Services, Mr Emmanuel Ogungbe, told Journalists on Thursday in Abuja that the commission had already signed an agreement with MasterCard.

“As opposed to just being an ID card, the card is also a cash card. What that means is you can also use it the way you currently use your ATM card.

“So if you put money on the card, you can withdraw this money anywhere in the world.

“Two, it’s also a travel card. What that means is that very soon, especially within the West African sub-region, you can travel passport-free as long as you have this card with you.

“So this card has multi-purpose use and that is why we are calling it a general-multi-purpose card, it’s not just an ID card.”

According to him, all that a holder of the card needs to do is to present it at the point of entry of any country where it will be swiped.

He said the information about the person, similar to the ones on passport, would come out and the country would allow entry.

Ogungbe said that the new card was error-proof and would enhance the security of the country.

“We have a system called automated biometrics identification system in our data centre that checks information of newly registered people coming into the database against what we already have in the database.

“If there is a hit, that means that person was registered before and of course this means we will deny new registration.

“So, there is no way of beating that system for now; I’m very confident of that. That will ensure that you can only register once.

“What the bad elements do is to hide in a way that you won’t be able to capture them. But we are saying with this (ID) we know who they are and we will be able to very easily locate them,’’ he said.

According to him, if there is a crime and the police are able to lift finger prints from the crime scene and send to NIMC, the commission will be able to give the full details of the criminals.

He also said that the card would reduce incidences of bank frauds as fraudsters would be easily detected and apprehended.

“Talk about even fraud in the banks, where someone will obtain a loan in a particular bank, move on to the next bank without servicing the previous loan to obtain another loan; that will become a thing of the past.

“Because once the bank takes your national identification number, it can see all your various transactions, all various businesses that you have with all the other banks.”

He said that government had asked the commission to “register every single Nigerian and legal residents” but warned the aliens against any attempt to use the card to commit crimes.

“If you are an alien and you think you can continue doing that and go scot-free, then the person’s time is numbered because very soon, we will get to him or her,” he said. (NAN)

Wenger hails Ramsey ‘transformation’

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is thrilled with Aaron Ramsey’s “transformation” over the last 12 months.

Once a highly criticized figure by Gunners supporters, the Welshman has been in imperious form in 2013-14 and his boss admits that he was considering dropping the midfielder to spare him the crowd’s frustrations.

“Let’s not forget that, one year ago, people were saying to me: ‘It’s difficult to play him at the Emirates (Stadium),’” Wenger told the press. “You could see there was impatience with him at home. You always are, as a manager, in a period where you think: ‘Do I push him through and he can go more down or do you give him a breather — to regenerate, to get him a fresh start?’

“That’s always difficult for us to assess because it is linked to their mental state. When their own confidence is down, of course, they are in trouble but he is a confident boy. You have to give Aaron credit for that transformation — the credit goes to him because he could deal with that. He has shown he could come back, never give up, and convince everybody that he has the needed quality.”

Ramsey’s progress was set back for a long time by a broken leg suffered in a challenge with Ryan Shawcross in February 2010 but Wenger feels that he has recovered and is now on his way to fulfilling his vast potential.

Early warning signs of cancer in children

Did you know that cancer is no respecter of even children? It is not only adults that suffer this horrible disease.

A recent study by scientists at the Roswell Parks Cancer Institute, United States of America, shows that it is the second leading cause of death in children younger than 15 after accidents in developed countries.

It is often detected late and misdiagnosed because when care givers, health care professionals and parents see its signs and symptoms in these children, they think it is a growth or phase that the children will outgrow.

But this is often not the case; nobody outgrows cancer growth. Rather, it should be taken out as soon as it is detected.

Head, Paediatric/ Oncology Unit of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Prof . Adebola Akinsule says children develop cancer but if detected and treated early, they have 80 per cent chance of surviving it than adults.

Akinsuile, who spoke at an awareness programme organised by Help to Heal /Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation, in collaboration with Golden Tulip Hotels in Lagos on Thursday, notes that even though its curable, many Nigerian children die from it due to various challenges.

One of them is late detection and misdiagnosis. According to paediatric oncologist, many children have died of various cancers because of lack of knowledge on the part of the parents and the caregivers like nurses and doctors.

He says because the nature and type of cancers that develop in children are different from those that develop in adults, they are not easy to spot.

Akinsuile adds that cancers in children are hard to recognise because its symptoms mimic common illnesses like malaria, bumps and bruises which can mask the early warning signs.

He states, “Cancer in children is not as a result of the lifestyle or environmental risk factors like smoking, pollution and drinking. Instead, it’s usually the result of DNA changes in cells that take place very early in life even from the womb. This is difficult for many to accept.

“Cancer can happen to anybody even in babies. When its symptoms start, most mothers think it is malaria or measles, it is until they see the right doctor that they can know that it is cancer,” the expert stresses.

He pleads with parents to stop self medication on their children and take then to see a doctor or specialist any time they notice an usual growth or when they fall ill frequently.

Akinsuile notes, “It is parents that can help us fight cancer in children because they are the first to see it. They are the ones that will bring the child to the hospital; children don’t come to see the doctors on their own.

“Don’t be scared to take your child to a doctor if you notice that he/she has an unusual growth in any part of the body. It could be cancerous and if we need to remove it early. Today, up to 70 per cent of all cases of cancer in children can be cured, you cannot say that for adults. It is not a verdict that your child will die.”

To shed more light on cancer in children and to encourage early detection, experts on kidshealth.com take a closer look at the top five cancers found in children and the warning signs .

Leukemia

Leukemia is a cancer of the bone marrow. It is the most common childhood cancer and accounts for about 34 per cent of all cancers in children. All cases occur between the ages of two and four and is more common in males than females.

Symptoms – Leukemia starts with bone and joint pain, fatigue, weakness, bleeding, fever and weight loss.

Brain Tumours and other nervous system tumours make up about 27 per cent of childhood cancers. Most brain tumours in children start in the lower parts of the brain, such as the cerebellum or brain stem. Although brain tumours are typically different in children as opposed to adults, many of the symptoms remain same. They include headache, dizziness, balance problems, vision, hearing or speech problems and frequent vomiting

Neuroblastoma

It arises from immature nerve cells in infants and young children. Primarily found in children younger than five, this disease often begins in the adrenal glands and makes up seven per cent of childhood cancers in the US. It’s more common in males than females, and only one to two per cent of children with this disease have a family history of it.

Symptoms:

Impaired ability to walk and changes in eyes (bulging, dark circles, droopy eyelids).Pain in various locations of the body and diarrhoea and high blood pressure

Wilms Tumour

It starts in the kidneys and is the most common type of paediatric kidney cancer. Wilms tumours usually only form in one kidney, but sometimes both – only in small cases – and accounts for about five per cent of all paediatric cancers. This disease is typically found in very young children – three to four years old – and is not common in children over six. There are approximately 5000 new cases and about 9 out of 10 children are cured.

Symptoms:

Swelling or lump in the belly, fever, pain, nausea and poor appetite.

Lymphoma

It starts in certain cells of the immune system called lymphocytes. These cancers affect lymph nodes and other lymph tissues, like the tonsils or thymus. They can also affect the bone marrow and other organs, and can cause different symptoms depending on where the cancer is growing.

Symptoms:

•Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, or groin, unexplained weight loss, fever, sweats and weakness.

At times, music is more effective than drugs

Have you always wondered how listening and dancing to your favourite song keeps you happy and going all day? Science has proved over and over again that good music soothes the body, soul and relieves stress.

Music is said to be a universal language. It is known to unite cultures and nations.

Researchers state that playing and listening to music has great benefits for both our mental and physical health.

A review of 400 research papers in the Neurochemistry of Music found that music can improve the function of the body’s immune system, reduce pain and blood pressure in addition to relieving stress.

The study proves that listening and singing along to a music is more successful and effective than prescription drugs in decreasing a person’s anxiety .

The lead researcher, professor of medicine, James Levitin, says playing and listening to music reduced pain and anxiety levels in cancer patients.

Levitin states, “We have found compelling evidence that musical interventions can play a health care role in settings ranging from operating rooms to family clinics. But even more importantly, we were able to document the neuro chemical mechanisms by which music has an effect in four domains: management of mood, stress, immunity and as an aid to social bonding.”

He states that listening to music increases the production of the antibody, Immunoglobin A, which plays an important role in helping the body fight infections and diseases.

“The body produces higher levels of these antibody, Immunoglobin A when you listen to music or sing a song from your heart. This antibody attacks germs and bacteria invading the body.”

Listening to and playing music can also lower levels of cortisol (the stress hormone), according to Levitin and Dr. Mona Lisa Chanda, his postgraduate research fellow.

Also, a research published in the British Journal of Psychiatry states that music therapy, when combined with standard care, is a successful treatment for depression.

They add that it is not just cool music and jazz that is good for your health.

According to them, fast-paced music supplies more adrenaline to the brain which is necessary for mental activities.

They note that listening to thrilling and loud music gives similar health benefits that food and good sex gives.

The report states, “Music gives more pleasure and it makes you anticipate, which is similar to the feeling you have during sex. When this happens, your system secrets more dopamine, the hormone that makes you happy and reduces pain and stress.”

There is more to music, here are six interesting ways that it can help your health,

Relieves back and muscle pain

Experts say that music works on the autonomic nervous system – the part of the nervous system responsible for controlling our blood pressure, heartbeat and brain function – and also the limbic system – the part of the brain that controls feelings and emotions.

According to a research published in Vienna Medical Weekly by Austrian doctors, when slow rhythms are played, our blood pressure and heartbeat slow down which helps us breathe more slowly, thus reducing muscle tension in our neck, shoulders, stomach and back.

They add that apart from relieving physical tension, music also reduces psychological tension in the mind.

Clinical psychologist Franz Wendtner, who led the study, says, ‘Music is an important part of our physical and emotional wellbeing – ever since we were babies in our mother’s womb listening to her heartbeat and breathing rhythms.

“Listening to music for about 25 minutes every day for at least 10 days can help prevent back pain and also make you sleep better. Music can help migraine and chronic headache sufferers reduce the intensity, frequency, and duration of the headaches.”

‘The experts believe that any type of classical music that is calm and slow can help relieve muscle pain.

Reduces blood pressure

By playing recordings of relaxing music every morning and evening, people with high blood pressure can train themselves to lower their blood pressure – and keep it low. According to a research reported at the American Society of Hypertension meeting in New Orleans, listening to just 30 minutes of classical, Celtic or raga music every day may significantly reduce high blood pressure.

Medicine for the heart

Music is good for your heart. British researchers recruited young men and women, half of whom were trained musicians. The participants slipped on head phones and listened to six styles of music, including rap and classical pieces, with random two-minute pauses. As the participants kicked back and listened, the researchers monitored their breathing, heart rates and blood pressure. The participants had faster heart and breathing rates when they listened to lively music. When the musical slowed, so did their heart and breathing rates.

During the musical pauses, heart and breathing rates normalised or reached more optimal levels. Whether or not a person liked the style of music did not matter. The tempo, or pace, of the music had the greatest effect on relaxation.

Improves memory

The power of music to affect memory is quite intriguing. Listening to sixty beats per minute activates the left and right brain. The simultaneous left and right brain action maximises learning and retention of information. The information being studied activates the left brain while the music activates the right brain. Also, activities which engage both sides of the brain at the same time, such as playing an instrument or singing, cause the brain to be more capable of processing information.

The era of neutrino astronomy has begun

Astrophysicists using a telescope embedded in Antarctic ice have succeeded in a quest to detect and record the mysterious phenomena known as cosmic neutrinos — nearly massless particles that stream to Earth at the speed of light from outside our solar system, striking the surface in a burst of energy that can be as powerful as a baseball pitcher’s fastball. Next, they hope to build on the early success of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory to detect the source of these high-energy particles, said Physics Professor Gregory Sullivan, who led the University of Maryland’s 12-person team of contributors to the IceCube Collaboration.

“The era of neutrino astronomy has begun,” Sullivan said as the IceCube Collaboration announced the observation of 28 very high-energy particle events that constitute the first solid evidence for astrophysical neutrinos from cosmic sources.

By studying the neutrinos that IceCube detects, scientists can learn about the nature of astrophysical phenomena occurring millions, or even billions of light years from Earth, Sullivan said. “The sources of neutrinos, and the question of what could accelerate these particles, has been a mystery for more than 100 years. Now we have an instrument that can detect astrophysical neutrinos. It’s working beautifully, and we expect it to run for another 20 years.”

The collaboration’s report on the first cosmic neutrino records from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, collected from instruments embedded in one cubic kilometer of ice at the South Pole, was published Nov. 22 in the journal Science.

“This is the first indication of very high-energy neutrinos coming from outside our solar system,” said University of Wisconsin-Madison Physics Professor Francis Halzen, principal investigator of IceCube. “It is gratifying to finally see what we have been looking for. This is the dawn of a new age of astronomy.”

“Neutrinos are one of the basic building blocks of our universe,” said UMD Physics Associate Professor Kara Hoffman, an IceCube team member. Billions of them pass through our bodies unnoticed every second. These extremely high-energy particles maintain their speed and direction unaffected by magnetic fields. The vast majority of neutrinos originate either in the sun or in Earth’s own atmosphere. Far more rare are astrophysical neutrinos, which come from the outer reaches of our galaxy or beyond.

The origin and cause of astrophysical neutrinos are unknown, though gamma ray bursts, active galactic nuclei and black holes are potential sources. Better understanding of these neutrinos is critically important in particle physics, astrophysics and astronomy, and scientists have worked for more than 50 years to design and build a high-energy neutrino detector of this type.

IceCube was designed to accomplish two major scientific goals: measure the flux, or rate, of high-energy neutrinos and try to identify some of their sources. The neutrino observatory was built and is operated by an international collaboration of more than 250 physicists and engineers. UMD physicists have been key collaborators on IceCube since 2002, when its unique design was devised and construction began.

IceCube is made up of 5,160 digital optical modules suspended along 86 strings embedded in ice beneath the South Pole. The National Science Foundation-supported observatory detects neutrinos through the tiny flashes of blue light, called Cherenkov light, produced when neutrinos interact in the ice. Computers at the IceCube laboratory collect near-real-time data from the optical sensors and send information about interesting events north via satellite. The UMD team designed the data collection system and much of IceCube’s analytic software. Construction took nearly a decade, and the completed detector began gathering data in May 2011. http://www.punchng.com/healthwise/the-era-of-neutrino-astronomy-has-begun/

The ranking table on the world football body’s Website on Thursday showed that Nigeria has 710 points, as against the 724 points it had with the last ranking in October.

The latest ranking places Nigeria fourth in Africa, behind Algeria, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, who have 800, 849 and 918 points, respectively.

HIV/AIDS prevalence rises by 100,000 in Ogun –Commissioner

The Ogun State Government on Thursday raised the alarm over the increase in the number of persons living with the HIV/AIDS virus across the state. The government said the number of persons infected with the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the state had risen to 400,000. This year, the figure of persons living with the deadly virus has increased by 100,000 compared to the rate in 3012 while the current rate of prevalence stands at 3.1 per cent. The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka, who said this on Thursday in Abeokuta at a news conference to herald this year’s World Aids Day, stated that the irregular and unstable pattern of the prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS in the state since 1996 clearly showed that “we are not winning the war against HIV/AIDS”. Soyinka however assured the people that the government had not relented in its aggressive fight against the virus in all areas, including education, sensitisation, HIV testing and counseling and provision of antiretroviral drugs.

28-yr-old 'grandmother' Who Just Became A 'great-grandmother’

For many 28-year-olds, the idea of starting a family can be a daunting prospect......

But one woman has embraced her matriarchal role with open arms, after welcoming her first great-grandchild into the family.

Kelly Baker from Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, took on three step-children and their nine offspring when she married 68-year-old Bob in 2010.

But the 28-year-old couldn’t be happier with their budding family, despite her husband being more than a decade older than both her parents and her eldest grandchild just three years her junior.

According to Daily Mail reports, ‘It’s so wonderful having a baby in the family,’ says Mrs Baker, who has resigned hopes of children of her own.

Kelly, whose friends tried to warn her off grandfather Bob when they first met, loves grandchildren, Chanice, Amber, Warren, Chloe, Toby, Kamran, Arran, Jade and Tahra like her own.

Baby Layla who is just five-months-old is the first great-grandchild in the family.

‘I feel like they’re my own family, we spoil them rotten,’ she told the Daily Mirror.

The couple who work together as cleaners met when Kelly was just 21, after the pensioner stopped seeing one of her friends who was also in her twenties.

Having endured the harsh criticisms of friends and families, Bob proposed after four years of dating.

While Mrs Baker has given up on the idea of having their own children, father-of-nine husband Bob insists ‘never say never,’ though admits the family is ‘quite large enough.’

Mrs Baker describes meeting her spouse’s three children, the youngest of whom is ten years older than she, as one of the hardest things about their relationship.

‘But once they had gotten to know me they were very accepting and we’ve since become close’.

All 13 family members will spend Christmas together in a local pub for a ‘huge dinner’, the couple say.

And though naysayers sometimes hurt her feelings with ‘snide comments’, Kelly insists she has proved ‘everyone’ wrong with her marriage that is as happy as she could hope for.

Word of advice – Don’t hug Wizkid on stage except he invites you.

The Nigerian music star was at The Guinness Big Eruption Concert on Saturday 23rd November 2013 (Same day as Tiwa Savage’s wedding).

He got the hug alright, but we are pretty sure he wasn’t expect what came next. Wizkid’s bodyguard quickly grabbed the fan and threw him off the stage.

Go And Die - Oshiomole Tells A Widow

Where is the 'human face' in governance?

Woke up with strength and vigour this morning and was up to face today with all hopes and aspirations but was sad & almost started crying after watching this video.

I've been an advocate of leaders been strong at all time with will power to carry out leadership responsibilities. And that emotional leaders don't go far but certainly not this way.

In leadership and governance, there's a place for 'Human face' no matter the circumstances. Widows to the best of my knowledge are integral part of our society and if we don't apply human face when dealing with them, am afraid we are far from getting there as a people.

Two wrongs indeed can never make things right and as such, can't fathom why the Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams A. O. will treat this widow like this and even tell her to go and die when she's struggling to provide food for her family. I think it would've been far better to make her pay a fine for her wrong doing than this humiliation.

The agony of the poor in our society...... http://www.nairaland.com/1534719/go-die-oshiomole-tells-widow

How to Foster Class Participation

Urge questions in non-academic settings.

There’s something about a classroom of desks and a teacher in front of a whiteboard that rattles the nerves of kids. Foster confidence outside of the classroom, then, by encouraging your child to talk to employees at the grocery store, or order and buy their own food, suggests Milam.

Switch roles on a daily basis.

Each afternoon, ask your child what the best and worst thing about the school day was, asking clarification questions as appropriate. Then, switch roles: let your child ask you what the best and worst thing about your work day was. Answer thoughtfully, and allow her to ask follow-up questions, too.

Don’t act like an expert.

“Both of my kids are very outgoing and gregarious, but my son is at times hesitant to answer particular questions, especially if an ‘expert’ is checking out his abilities,” says Milam. Avoid taking on the role of an expert during discussions – learn alongside your child instead. If she asks you why birds fly in a V-formation, ask a question in response to keep her mind tinkering instead of telling her the answer. Or, if she asks you how to spell a word, sound it out together rather than flip open a dictionary.

Create a query box.

Written expression can be just as valuable as verbal, says Milam. Cover up a small container with plain paper – an empty Kleenex box, perhaps – and draw question marks all over it, designating it as the box for questions in your household. Questions can be about anything: the news, an upcoming family event, or homework. Sonal Ajwali, an academic content writer in Delhi, India, suggests writing questions down to encourage children to communicate without fear. Every evening, family members take turns reading a question aloud, and anyone has the chance to contribute an answer. The advantage here, says Ajwali, is you won’t single out a child who is learning how to articulate ideas aloud.

Generate peer discussion.

Oftentimes, a student may be scared to ask a question during class, but realize, upon speaking to her friends after school, that they had similar questions for the teacher. Encourage your child to have these follow-up conversations with her classmates – an opportune time is when you drive her and her friend home from school. This generates the peer support she needs to ask a question in the next session.

Building confidence in class is no overnight task. But with your support and a tolerance for your child’s everyday curiosity, she may find outlets to inquire and speak her mind.

Soldiers, police stop Tinubu, Buhari, others at INEC office

Soldiers, riot policemen and other security agencies on Thursday confronted the leaders of the All Progressives Congress during their march to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja to protest against the November 16 Anambra state governorship election. After a strategic meeting in the APC’s new secretariat in Wuse 2 in the Federal Capital Territory, which lasted about three hours, the party leaders took to the streets and embarked on a procession to INEC’s office in Maitama District. The protesters however met a stiff resistance from stern-looking security operatives comprising the Police, soldiers, SSS and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps. An Armoured Personnel Carrier, marked NPF 6359 C, measuring about 40-feet long, was used to barricade the entrance to the commission’s office, while the driver of the truck and police officers were pelted with sachets of water by the APC youths.

In their separate speeches, the APC national Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; National Leader of the party and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; former chairman of ANPP, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu; and ex-Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), called for the sacking of INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, with immediate effect for his handling of the Anambra State governorship poll and the recent Delta State Senatorial by-election.

Federal Government gives ASUU 1 week ultimatum to call off strike

During a press briefing in Abuja this morning, the acting Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike told journalist that the Federal Government has given the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) one week ultimatum to call off the ongoing strike.

Or else what? ASUU execs and President Jonathan were supposed to meet this week but the meeting is yet to hold. The ASUU strike began July 1, almost 5 months later, no resolution in sight. Sad!

The FG also said any Academic staff who fails to resume on or before December 4th automatically ceases to be a staff of the institution. Pro-chancellors of the various universities and the National Universities Commissions (NUC) have been directed to ensure compliance of this directive.

Walk Slowly So You Don’t Trip

“Take your most conservative estimate for the amount of time you need. Then double it. That’s your most realistic deadline.” -Software Development Maxim

“People tend to overestimate what they will accomplish in one year, but underestimate what they will accomplish in five.” -Steve Pavlina

The more time you give yourself to complete a goal, the more likely you’ll achieve it. With any goal under 1-2 years, you’re probably overestimating the amount you can accomplish. By undertaking new goals with deliberate slowness, you increase the chance you can achieve lasting success.

Deliberate Slowness

Deliberate slowness has lost its appeal as a virtue. Although most people remember the old fable about the slow and successful tortoise against the faster hare, slowness is viewed as a sin in today’s culture. Walk through any bookstore and you’ll see promises to lose weight, make money and be successful in less time than you ever imagined.

Lose twenty pounds in one week. Double your income in a year. Change any bad habit instantly. Although these promises may sell more books, they undermine the power of deliberate slowness.

What would happen if you made your goal to lose twenty pounds, not in one month, but in one year? First, your likelihood of success would increase dramatically. The steps necessary to lose twenty pounds in a month are more drastic than losing twenty pounds in a year. Second, you’re more likely to develop the habits of eating and exercise that will keep the weight off once you reach your goal. Permanent success, even if it takes longer to reach, is worth far more than any fleeting achievement.

Almost any goal is achievable, but it might not be achievable within the deadline you set. If I set the goal of reading 1000 books, that goal is relatively easy within 30 years, strenuous within 7 years and almost impossible within 3 years. Setting the goal to become a millionaire is almost impossible in 1 year, difficult in 10 and practically a sure thing with 40 years, provided you follow a plan.

Patience is Underrated

Patience must underlie deliberate slowness. Almost any goal is achievable within a long enough time frame. However, the longer the time frame, the more patience you have to exert to keep your behavior consistent throughout this time. If you set the goal of investing $100 per month, but give up in less than a year, you won’t achieve any meaningful increase on your investment.

Patience forces you to focus on the process towards a goal, instead of just the result. The person who sprints at the beginning of a marathon is focused only on the end, not the steps beneath her feet. Once you admit that following a pace is necessary, you become focused on the steps. Once you accept slowness, you may even enjoy the path to the finish line.

Slowness is Quicker

In a paradox worthy of Lao Tzu, slowness actually achieves results faster than the alternative. When you make the effort to take more time than you believe is necessary, you ensure you don’t slide backwards. Like running on ice, you place each foot carefully in front of the next, so you won’t trip.

When I first started this website, I made my goal of reaching a minimum income at over three years. It’s amazing that someone could give up on a project like this after only six months. In the future, even though my skills have improved, I would expect any online business venture to take a few years before it is financially stable.

If I make a fitness goal, I deliberately make the progress slower than it needs to be. Instead of gaining 10 pounds of muscle in one month (as many people ambitiously strive for), I’d place that goal at 3-6 months. By taking longer, I can focus on doing it properly, making the necessary changes to diet and health last. Also, by making changes slowly, I can eat healthfully, without eating unhealthy diets just to force my body to adapt.

Personal Development Starts with a Firm Footing

Self-improvement is difficult. I think it is more difficult than most people realize. Making a permanent change, even a small one, takes effort, time and more than a few mistakes. On a short-term time horizon, even the smallest changes are almost miraculous.

The power of focusing on personal development is that returns compound. The investments you make in one area, allow you to improve in another. Being healthier gives you more energy to work harder, giving you more money to educate yourself. This upward spiral means that in the long-term, small changes can have a huge impact.

A common mistake is to confuse these short and long-term time horizons. By assuming self-improvement functions the same way in six months as it does in six years, you make two errors. First, you greatly overestimate the amount you can realistically accomplish in six months. Second, you underestimate the power that deliberate slowness has in six years.

Because of this distinction, I would be incredibly optimistic if I felt I could permanently increase my income by 30% in the next month. However, I’d consider it completely reasonable that I could triple my income in the next six years.

If you don’t engage in deliberate slowness, you risk sliding back to the beginning. A temporary 50% increase of my income is worth far less to me than a permanent 5% increase. One was stepped firmly, and can be used as the basis for future growth. The other will break if pressure is applied.

Banky W - Jasi (Video)

Empire Mates Entertainment is proud to present the official video for Banky W's "Jasi". The song was produced by MasterKraft, and features additional background vocals by EME starlet Niyola. Kate Henshaw Embarrassed A Contestant In Nigeria Got Talent Audition (Video)

This was just too unfair and it's seriously the height of unprofessionalism on the part of Kate and Dan. This guy who says his name is 'Heaven', showed up for the Nigerian Got Talent audition in Portharcourt, only for Kate Henshaw to embarrass him and walked out on him in company of Dan Foster when he tried singing, simply because his name is 'Heaven'. Poor guy! What do you think of Heaven's audition?

Gala Sellers To Represent Nigeria AT 2014 Winter Olympics.

The Nigerian sports ministry has embarked on an operation to recruit hawkers who sell items on major roads across the country. The sports minister, Mr John Fadiora, said “This is something we should have done a long time ago, we have many people who sell things on the roads and they are always in motion, running up and down to sell their goods. Some of them even run faster than many cars, these are raw talents wasting away. The federal ministry of sports has decided to work with these hawkers, especially the ones that sell gala sausage rolls, they run like sport cars. One of them chased me from Oshodi to my house in Victoria Island one day because I forgot to pay him his money, what was really surprising was that he even got to my house before me even though I was driving.

Meet John and Ann Betar. They are celebrating their 81st wedding anniversary today! They are the longest married couple in America and I would imagine that not a lot of couples around the world can beat their record.

Their advice on how they have stayed together for so long - just roll with the punches.

“If you think a little bit about what you’re doing, and if it’s wrong… we straighten it out, and if not we just try to go along with it,” said Ann Betar, 97, who is married to 101-year-old John Betar.

The Betars eloped on Nov. 25, 1932, after leaving to avoid Ann’s father’s plans to have her marry a man 20 years her senior. Ann was 17 and John was 21 at the time.

Now eight decades later, the couple lives in Fairfield, Connecticut, and has five children, 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

"Well, marriage isn't a lovey-dovey thing for 80 years. You learn to accept one another's ways of life, agreements, disagreements -- disagreements on our children, preparation on bringing up your kids,” Ann Betar said. “That was the main interest… was your children.”

Wow....this is a testimony to the fact that marriage works. You can make your marriage work. No one is perfect. It's those beautiful imperfections that make life interesting and worth living.

Congratulations to the Betars!

Imo Assembly To Honour Young Rocket Launchers

• Summons Immigration boss over Boko Haram

IMPRESSED by their feat, the Imo State House of Assembly has invited the two school children from Okigwe, Masters Gideon Emenike and Kingsley Nwofor, to the Assembly Tuesday for special recognition.

The two boys who are in secondary school ‘launched’ small rocket which flew about 100 meters.

Also, the lawmakers have summoned the Controller of Immigration, to appear before them to explain the alleged case of infiltration of Boko Haram insurgents into Aboh Mbaise, as reported by a local newspaper in the state.

In a statement on Sunday, the Speaker of the Assembly, Chief Benjamin Uwajumogu urged relevant authorities to award the two boys scholarship.

The lawmaker representing Okigwe in the House, Chief Acho Ihim, had drew the attention of the House to the young boys’ feat.

The Minority Leader, Mrs. Ngozi Pat-Ekeji, had raised the issue of the alleged influx of Boko Haram members on the floor of the House.

Switzerland Returns Abacha's $700m Loot To Nigerian Government

The Government of Switzerland has said it has returned to the Nigerian government about $700m, stashed in Swiss banks and traced to the late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha. Ambassador of Switzerland to Nigeria, Dr. Hans-Rudolf Hodel, stated this in Abuja at a press briefing on Monday ahead of a two-day seminar on Anti-Money Laundering and Combating Financing of Terrorism. He, however, added that the Swiss government would be ready to reopen the case if Nigeria presented fresh evidence of any monies still being held in any bank in the European nation. “Switzerland and Nigeria agreed to request the World Bank to participate in the review of the use of funds, in the framework of a budget control process of various welfare projects,” he said. Hodel, who maintained that Switzerland had no interest in withholding illicit funds, explained that his country had returned about $1.7bn to the where the money was stolen in the last 15 years.

Man Drowns In Lagos While Swimming To Win A Bet

A 25-year-old man, Toheeb Jimoh, has drowned in a Lagos river while reportedly swimming to win a bet.

He had allegedly bragged that he could swim the Lagos Lagoon from a particular point to the shore on Saturday evening.

It was learnt that when some people challenged his claim, he had allegedly dared them to place a bet. After the bet was placed, he reportedly went on a boat to the point and jumped into the lagoon hoping to swim to the shore.

Friends of the deceased, who had accompanied him on a boat, were said to have fled the scene after he did not make it out of the water.

The incident, which occurred at Aiyedun Street, Bariga, was said to have caused commotion among residents who trooped to the site, hoping to save Jimoh.

The corpse of Jimoh was said to have been recovered around 7pm same day and buried beside the water around 12am in line with the traditions.

Our correspondent learnt that the late Abeokuta, Ogun State indigene, had only recently gained admission into the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta before the tragedy struck.

A source who spoke on the condition of anonymity said, “He and some of his friends were actually fond of betting and gambling. So that evening, they decided to take the betting to another level. Toheeb told them he could swim from the Third Mainland Bridge end of the river to the shore.

“When the boat they took got to that point, which was a little close to the shore, he gave his clothes to his brother and jumped into the water.

“His friends who were in the boat waited for him at the shore without success. After it dawned on them that something was amiss, his younger brother raised the alarm. By the time people got to the scene, he had died.”

When PUNCH Metro visited the site where the incident took place, he observed that the scene was directly under the Third Mainland Bridge.

Leaves, pure water sachets, and other dirt were seen floating on the river shore. The area was mainly occupied by shanties and make-shift structures.

Residents of the area refused to comment for fear of being implicated.

When our correspondent visited the Jimohs on Ajenifuja Street, he was told they had traveled to complete the burial rites. Their bungalow was also quiet, while the street was deserted.

A resident on the street, Tiamiyu Abdullateef, said the deceased was highly pious.

He said Jimoh had earlier gone on a boat to “play a game with his friends”, and returned without any incident.

Abdullateef, however, said the deceased merely went to the lagoon to defecate after he became pressed.

“Then, he decided to swim and wash his body. His brother, Wale, waited at the shore. When he was swimming back, he just lost breath, and was exhausted. His brother saw him drowning but did not suspect that anything was wrong until it was too late.”

When our correspondent visited Bariga Police Station, a senior official told him that the police heard about the case informally.

The officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to speak for the police, said, “It was not reported here, and there is little we can do although we heard of it,”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said she was in a conference and promised to call back.\

Things To Consider Before Buying A Laptop

Buying a new laptop computer can be both frustrating and expensive. Technology is growing with times, a sign of transformation. Same can be in computer world, previously we used to be happy with PC but now the whole criteria are changed as people are upgrading themselves for using Laptops. Recent years showed advancement in Laptops and the reason behind increased purchasing trends is its portability which makes it easy to use and moving from one place to another without applying efforts. So people prefer the use of Laptops over Personal Computers because of several reasons including upcoming technology, portability, etc. But, often we get baffled when it comes to purchasing new Laptops. Often, we are deceived by purchasing the system which is not self-reliable to use. So, before buying a new Laptop, things to consider before buying a new laptop are below :

1. Specifications: This is the initiative point one should keep in mind before buying a new Laptop. Technical specifications include system’s hardware and software ingredients which is the basic things. One should check out the RAM capacity, Hard Disk, Processor, Video Card, etc which ascertain a Laptop’s reliability or otherwise. If its capacity is low, then you will obviously suffer fluctuations like frequent hanging up of system and so on. So, it’s recommended to go with such master piece which is derived with at least 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Disk, Dual Core i5 processor including one Graphic Card. So, before purchasing any Laptop, put this into consideration.

2. Structure and Durability: The next priority to keep in mind is Laptop’s structure which includes size, durability, weight and so on. The main purpose for selecting net book is its portability and if the size for same is lumpy, then there’s no catch. So you should see whether the device is handy or not. You should also think of its weight; normally, a system weighing about two kilogrammes is pretty to determine the reliability and portability. These two factors even determine the durability of system. Users with harsh working tendency always need that device to endure surprising shocks. So, the laptop must have extra tough metal covered, to ensure no internal damages are done to the hard disk, processor, etc. Thus, if you are completely satisfied with the structure of a Laptop, then go for it.

3.Battery Life: The Battery Life is directly or indirectly the first need of any user. If the device’s battery system is of poor quality, then one will face many inevitable problems. The very first thing to do as a customer is, first ask about the Laptop’s battery life. So one should check and enquire about maximum support the Laptop’s battery will give. Standard need is 10 hours or as per usage.

4. Price and Budget: Every person has its own budget, and one should buy Laptops bearing same in mind. For instance, if your budget is 25, 000 and you are dreaming of a device which costs 50, 000, this is calling for avoidable debts. So, in such case, you should concentrate on main functions needed for your use. In cheap price you can’t enjoy latest technology but can surely seek out functions which are basic and required one.

5. Other Specifications: Other things include connectivity, user guide, display resolution, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB ports, etc. These are the required specifications which users should keep and things to consider before buying a new laptop ,For new and fairly used or london used laptop if you need we can direct you to a best shop in Abuja, and any place you are ,do not hesitate to drop your comment if any,on our drop box.

Iheanacho, Father Fall-out Over FC Porto, Chelsea Move

Golden Eaglets sensation Kelechi Iheanacho has had a major falling out with his father over the European club he should move to.

Kelechi has told his father in no uncertain terms that he wishes to move to Portuguese champions FC Porto, while Iheanacho senior has insisted he should choose between EPL giants Chelsea and Manchester City.

“Kelechi has had a major falling out with his father over where he should go to. The boy called and blasted the father from Lagos, where he is. He said his father is the major cause of the many controversies dogging his transfer,” a source familiar with this transaction informed only MTNFootball.com

“The boy also told his father that he has made up his mind that he wants to go to Porto, who have agreed to also take in another Eaglet star, Chidera Ezeh, because of Kelechi.

“But the father has kicked against his son’s choice, insisting he should choose between Chelsea and Manchester City.”

Porto in pole place for Iheanacho

It is believed that two contending agents have put pressure on Iheanacho senior to force the boy to now choose between Chelsea and City.

Further checks reveal that Cameroon-based agent Olivier Noah is one of these agents and he is presently in Owerri.

James Iheanacho told MTNFootball.com: “FC Porto is wrong. The clubs coming are Chelsea and Manchester City, though more clubs are also coming.

“I have not decided where he will go until I see him.

“We will pray over it and God will guide us.
